Public schools of Brazil, will be forced to adopt a plan for the safe evacuation of students and staff in emergency situations.

The public schools of Sorocaba Brazil, 92 km from São Paulo, will be forced to adopt a plan for the safe evacuation of students and staff in emergency situations. It is expected that the bill approved today in final vote by the Board.

To become law, the project must still be endorsed by Mayor Vitor Lippi (PSDB). The schools have a period of one year to adapt to requirements that include escape routes marked, emergency exits and doors antipanic. About 80 businesses have to adapt to the new standard.

The author, Councilman Jose Francisco Martinez (PSDB), says that the project was presented in April this year, shortly after the episode known as "Realengo massacre" in which a gunman stormed a school in Realengo, west of Rio de January, and shot dead 12 students.

He said if the school was provided with escape routes the proportion of the tragedy could have been lower. According to the project, copies of a sketch with the emergency plan must be displayed in places of easy viewing and the school must perform simulations periodic evacuation of the building.
